The Game of Statues (in India)

The country which is economically robust and growing at a good pace - no one can deny its India.

We hear so many news lately; Tata's taking over Corus, Landrover and Jaguar, they trying for Oriental Express, launched the cheapest car in the universe - the "Nano". Reliance - having the biggest, the cheapest and the best refinery model in the whole world in Jamnagar, they trying to take over MTN - telecom major in African countries, they tying up with major Hollywood production companies to produce movies worth $1 billion in the next 5 years.
Still, we have backward states like UP, Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttaranchal, NE States, Orissa, etc. All these states have rich raw materials and minerals in abundance, but still the politicians take the people for a ride. People in many of the states are struggling to meet their day to day existence, either from natural disasters or from public missionaries.
Instead of looking and developing these backward zones, the main concern of the people at the helms of power is how to make headlines.

One of the headlines I read a few months back was "Ambedkar Samajik Parivartan Sthal (Ambedkar Memorial for Social Change)" - 500 crore project - What we are going to achieve by planting statues every where...?

For example - I remember there was a riot in Mumbai, as one of the statue had been desecrated. Riots took place at the cost of money, property and time. Who is going to pay back all the losses; the person who desecrated or the person who planted the statue?

According to me, it is the duty of the person who built the statue to safeguard it whether in private or in public land.

In one of the most recent news, Chatrapathi Shivaji Maharaj statue is going to be built in the Arabian Sea at the cost of 200 Crores in 2 years time and it is going to be taller than the Statue of Liberty. Is it necessary at this stage? I'm not talking from the election point of view. Mr. Vilchu (our CM of Maharashtra- Vilasarao Deshmukh) and Patil Saab (Deputy CM of Maharashtra) should think there are much better ways to hog the limelight rather than giving pose from the boat in the sea. Hundreds of farmers are committing suicide in the Vidarbha region, our babus don't have time to go and see the grass root problem, but they have time to visit the site for the Shivaji Statue in the Arabian Sea. Is this really necessary Mr. Vilchu? Why not use that money to uplift the farmers from their pitiable condition?

I'm unable to understand one thing; For all these statues the government get environmental clearance nod in a flash, where as development projects like Bandra- Worli Sea link takes around 2 years to get a nod.

Thank god there is no sea in UP or else Maya memsaab will erect 3 statues, one for Ambedkar, one for Kanshiramji and other for her(kanshiram "will" says that she should erect her statues on all places).

In this case, Karunanidhi is much ahead of others - he already built the statue of Tamil poet Saint Thiruvalluvar in Kanya kumari and ofcourse, Andhra is not far behind with Buddha Statue in the middle of Lake Hussain Sagar.

Once these statues are placed, there ends the responsibility of these politicians. They handover the statues to the crow (yes the bird CROW), which uses it as their restroom.

Plz. netas and babus, don't disgrace the leaders by erecting unnecessary statues. Respect comes from the heart and not by erecting statues.

At this rate, trust me - we will all have one statue in front of each house in another 50 years.

The only advantage by doing this is, Statue making will be a very profitable profession by next generation. You will see B.E or B.Tech in Statue making from leading Universities.

C'mon people wake up and think... raise the voice against all these useless spending. All the money spend in these useless stuff comes from our pocket (Yes, its the tax payers money and certainly not the netas money)

Jai Hind

ah..statues. crow's restroom is an understatement. Even a dog finds it comfortable to pee when it sees a statue, leave alone our young men. yup I feel dogs are definitely sensible considered to young men of holy Bharath who gets elated seeing a temple wall or a statue.
hey u missed out to mention Kannagi Statue of Chennai. The duel between two political parties who thought nothing constructive than breaking and rebuilding karpukarasi Kannagi statue. If only she is alive...sigh
A statue built for the great thespian chevalier Sivaji(Ganesan)in Chennai, funny it turned out to look like Chatrapathi Shivaji ending up in identity crisis.
Yes I agree with you.. the funds used for constructing statues can be used in rural development, forestry and thousand and one things waiting to be done.
